Royal College of Physicians reports on dangers of shisha smoking
Posted on
The Royal College of Physicians published a review of studies on hookah in the June 2015 issue of Addictive Behaviors that recommended public awareness of the potential harms of the tobacco product since it increases rates of infections like tuberculosis, herpes, and hepatitis:
- The study references “early stages” of research that show detrimental effects of hookah smoking like, e.g. an acute rise in cardiovascular activity or lung cancer.
- Pathogens are easily transmitted through mouthpieces and “one study revealed that smoking shisha quadruples the risk of lung cancer.”
- Based on findings, researchers are concerned about the increasing consumption of the product.
