Emerson votes to approve smokefree ordinance

The Emerson City Council unanimously approved an ordinance which would ban smoking in all public parks and recreational areas during its meeting on May 20. Anyone caught violating the new ordinance could face fines of $250 for a first offence, $500 for a second offense and $1,000 for any subsequent offenses. Emerson residents who testified had concerns due to an increasing number of local young adults and teens smoking in Ackerman Park. Read a news article from May 22, 2014.
