FDA to regulate e-cigarettes (Brenda Flanagan, NJTV News)

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is creating rules that will regulate e-cigarettes. Currently, most of the regulation has taken place on the local or state level. One are of concern for the federal government is the increased use of e-cigarettes by teens. 2.5 million middle and high school children use the products at least once per month, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
NJ already bans the sale of e-cigarettes to persons under age 19, and more than a dozen towns in the State have local laws that require age 21 to be sold such products. But flavorings of these products is not yet restricted, thus attracting young people to the fruit and candy flavorings of the e-liquids.
GASP’s Executive Director Karen Blumenfeld, Esq., is quoted in the story about the FDA needing to act swiftly to restrict e-cigarette flavorings since they appeal to young people.
