The Albany Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners voted today to ban smoking at all 2,200 housing units, and 25 feet from the property. The ban takes effect on January 1, 2016 with no phase-in and no exceptions to date.
Next week, the Authority will go door-to-door to educate residents about the new policy and connect smokers to quit programs. Nicotine patches will be available on-site too. Recent surveys from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development show that phasing-in programs have been less successful.
34 NY State housing authorities have smokefree policies, some requiring 100% smokefree. Read more at the Times Union story.
