Posted on
On April 7, 2015, 5th grade students at Belleville Elementary School #7 in the YMCA of Newark’s afterschool program will participate in Global Advisors on Smokefree Policy’s (GASP) “Art for Health” program. Students will learn about dangers of new tobacco products, why it’s important to live tobacco-free, how tobacco affects youth and our environment. Click here to learn more in the event flyer. Click here to read about the event on the New Jersey Office on Minority & Multicultural Health sponsored event page.
Students will express what they’ve learned by creating artwork, and receive certificates from the Mayor and Council’s office, organized by the Belleville Health Department! Students will also learn about national health and environmental celebrations happening in April and May:
- National Minority Health Month promotes and public awareness about health that affect ethnic and racial minorities. The N.J. Office on Minority & Multicultural Health sponsors events.
- May 31st is World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), an annual World Health Organization event to raise awareness about the health risks from tobacco use and exposure, and effective policies to reduce tobacco use and exposure. Students will learn about WNTD at this event.
- National Healthy Schools Day promotes and advances healthy school environments through education, technical assistance, research and advocacy. Tobacco-free schools are healthy! You can read the press release about National Healthy Schools Day here.
- National Environmental Education Week (EE Week) is the nation’s largest celebration of environmental education, inspiring environmental learning among K-12 students.
