The New Jersey Poison Information & Education System has released two media alerts concerning the dangers of tobacco products including electronic smoking devices and their accessories.
The media alert dated February 5, 2015 warns of cigars, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookah Pipes, and liquid nicotine. Finding that all of these items pose serious risk of poisoning to pets and young children. Pets as well as children have been known to eat cigars and cigarette “butts.” Also, there is enough nicotine in these tobacco products to be considered poisonous to pets. Any product containing nicotine should be kept out of sight and reach of both children and pets. When disposing these products, be sure to dispose of them properly to prevent exposure from the residue or liquid left in the container.
The media alert dated March 2, 2015 states that last year almost 20,000 children under the age of five required assistance from the NJ Poison Experts because they were exposed to potentially dangerous items such as household chemicals, medicines and vitamins, cigars/cigarettes, liquid nicotine in e-cigarette devices and hookah pipes, coins, magnets, and batteries. While most of the cases were managed at home without a visit to the hospital, many did require admission to an intensive care unit and some required surgery.
