Eighteen percent of American adults were cigarette smokers in 2012, down from 18.9 percent in 2011. The rate has dropped from 20.6 percent in 2009, the first statistically-significant change over multiple years since the 1997-2005 time period. Stan Glantz, a professor of medicine at the University of CA, San Francisco and the director of the university’s Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, points out that “This data shows that the whole premise that there is this hard-core group, where no matter what you do you can’t get them to quit, is just not true.” Read the New York Times article from June 25, 2013.
