Studies show that smoking bans save lives (TIME)

Recent laws that limit smoking in public places are contributing to fewer tobacco-related hospital visits and deaths. Researchers found a decrease in the number of heart attacks and a drop in the number of sudden cardiac deaths in a study done in Olmstead County, MN. This decline was attributable to more rigid smoke-free laws since, in the same time period, the rates of hypertension, diabetes and other heart-disease risk factors either remained constant or increased.
In the second study by the University of CA, San Francisco, researchers did a meta-analysis of smoke-free laws worldwide to conclude there is a “clear health benefit for regions that go smoke-free”.
