FDA unveils graphic health warning labels for cigarette packaging and advertising

On June 21, 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) unveiled graphic health warning labels to appear on cigarette packs sold in the USA and in cigarette ads seen in the USA, as of September 2012. The labels combine graphic imagery with facts to communicate the dangers related to smoking. View the images at the FDA’s website.
The 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act authorizes the FDA to regulate tobacco products. (link to our federal acts section above) Read the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services’ November 2010 remarks about reducing smoking rates from 21% in 2004, to 12% by 2020.
