2009 World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) Events Held in New Jersey

On May 27, 2009, 1200 Pairs of shoes were laid out on the lawn of the Somerset County Courthouse in New Jersey to represent the lives lost every day in the United States from a tobacco related illness. A press conference, held by educated and experienced speakers, addressed tobacco topics such as school policy, survival, and quitting. The event was sponsored by: Somerset Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency, Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies (REBEL), Community Partnerships for a Tobacco Free NJ, Somerset County Cancer Coalition, and the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders. At another event, ninety-five elementary school students at Brass Castle School in Washington Township, NJ learned about the dangers of smoking by participating in a poster contest. Partnering with the Community Prevention Resources of Warren County, Inc. Brass Castle children learned about the addictiveness and health dangers of tobacco. They were asked to create a poster with their own no-smoking theme. The Mercer County Tobacco Dependence Program held its annual “World No Tobacco Day” celebration with presentations by Marc L. Steinberg, Ph.D. and Ivy Pearlstein, APN to help raise awareness for tobacco control efforts in New Jersey.
