Study Finds Menthol Smokers Have a Harder Time Quitting (The Star Ledger)

A new research study found menthol smokers find it more difficult to quit smoking, especially among minorities. The study was conducted by The Cancer Institute of New Jersey at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and is published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. This study was partly funded by an FDA grant. According to the Star-Ledger article, the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act banned flavored cigarettes except for menthol, and the FDA is considering a full ban on menthol cigarettes since the group’s Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee recommendation in March concluded with a “removal of menthol cigarettes from the marketplace would benefit public health in the United States.” Tobacco health experts say that the marketing of the various menthol brands target the African-American population.
